Garry Lee Tonon (born September 12, 1991) is an American submission wrestler and mixed martial artist. He is a five-time Eddie Bravo Invitational Champion and has won titles in the ADCC Submission Wrestling Championship, IBJJF World and Pan Am Championships.
He is known for using leg locks in one-handed grappling competitions. He is considered part of the “Danaher Death Squad”, a group of several young professionals who train at the John Danaher Academy. They are known for their intense training regimen, as well as using Danaher’s leg, back, and weapon binding systems to consistently win submission matches by submission rather than points. He still trains regularly, but now mainly focuses on training and fighting in mixed martial arts.
Tonon has a background in folk wrestling, is also an expert in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Tom DeBlass and Ricardo Almeida, and is a senior coach at Brunswick BJJ in South Brunswick, New Jersey. He also trained extensively with wrestling and mixed martial arts coach John Danaher at Renzo Gracie Academy in Manhattan.
Mixed martial arts career
ONE Championship
He made his professional MMA debut in March 2018 and defeated Richard Corminal by knocking out in the second round. His next battle was on July 27, 2018 with Rahul Raju. He unanimously won this match. Tonon won the game in the third round by choking without a condom. Tonon then faced Sung Jong Lee in the ONE Championship: Heart of the Tiger. Tonon won the second round with a guillotine choke.
On March 31, 2018, Tonon continued his winning streak by defeating Yoshiki Nakahara and Anthony Engelen with a 1st round heel hook submission at the ONE: A New Era Tonon Championship. [28] In May, Tonon fought Yoshiki Nakahara in ONE Championship: Enter the Dragon. He couldn’t decide the winner with a first-round submission.
As of July 2020 (and August 2019), Tonon is on a five-fight winning streak and is undefeated in MMA. Matsushima Koyomi was scheduled to fight in the ONE Championship: Inside Matrix Four on November 20, 2020. However, due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, the event was postponed and moved to ONE Championship: Big Bang on December 4, 2020. He later announced that he would fight without his coach Jun Danaher is in the first corner. Time is running out… Tonon lost the match by handing the second round.
On November 20, 2021, Promotions announced plans to hold the event on December 5, 2021, but was later canceled due to the decision to postpone the event due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On January 14, 2022, it was announced that the event would take place on March 26, 2022, but on February 10, 2022, the promotion announced that the event date was changed to March 11, 2022. He was hit by a hammer fist while attempting a heel hook and suffered a KO loss in the first round, earning him his second MMA loss.
