At the tender age of twelve, she made her cinematic debut as a child protégé of a hitman in Léon: The Professional, an action-drama film (1994). Her father’s grandparents were Jewish immigrants to Israel, while her maternal grandparents were American Jews.

The pair started dating in 2009 after meeting on the set of Black Swan and were married on 4 August 2012, in a Jewish ceremony performed in Big Sur, California. After Millepied obtained the role of director of dance with the Paris Opera Ballet and Portman indicated a wish to become a French citizen, the family resided in Paris for a period. They live in Los Angeles as of 2013.
